National Geographic – Geography Bee
This past week, 6 of our students had the opportunity to compete in a National Geographic Society Geography Bee. Karen Valdes from Community Christian School volunteered her time to facilitate the Bee. Participants included: Haley Thomalla, Regan Seay, CaDynce Lively, Emma Leggott, Tyler Leggott, and Quinlan Adams. This group prepared by meeting regularly to study geography at the Lively family home.
The first round of preliminary competition was a series of rounds where each student was offered the opportunity to answer one multiple choice question on a topic, and each round was on a different topic. At the end of several rounds, the points were added up and two students were eliminated. The final round eliminated two more, and in the Grand Champion round the final two, Tyler and Quinlan, faced off on single written answer questions until one got one wrong. Quinlan won that round with an answer to a question about Kenya. He will have the opportunity to sit for the qualifying test for the State Geo Bee. All of our kids performed really well, and it was a great experience. We hope to offer a geography course in the Fall co-operative and maybe have a larger group of competitors next year.
