Knight Museum
On the last Monday in October our group had a field trip to the Knight Museum in Alliance, to see the Smithsonian Museums on Main Street Traveling Exhibit entitled “Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America.”
We were treated to a personal tour by the museum staff, beginning with a video about the history of the Sandhills of Nebraska. Then we were guided on a tour of the regular exhibits of the museum, covering topics such as the Indian artifacts found there, sod houses, ranch life, the Oregon trail, and the Ogallala Aquifer. This museum is top notch and even without the Smithsonian exhibit, it is well worth a visit.
After the regular museum, we toured the Smithsonian exhibit. It was a wonderful blend of information and facts about hometown sports teams, and artifacts from real local teams. It was a real treat and we were thankful for the families that organized the tour. It should also be mentioned the museum is free, open year round, and has a truly helpful and wonderful staff!
